What is Pichwai or Pichvai Art ? Pichwai (also spelled Pichvai) is a traditional Indian art form that originated over 400 years ago in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. The word “Pichwai” comes from “pichh” (behind) and “wai” (hanging)—meaning a textile painting hung behind the idol of Shreenathji, a form of Lord Krishna.

Lesson 1 — Introduction, Sketching & Basic Layout
Objective: Learn the fundamentals of Pichwai art and sketch the complete composition. Topics Covered: Brief introduction to Pichwai painting style (motifs, symbolism, flat colors, decorative forms) Understanding proportions for the cow, calf, lotus flowers, and arch Light pencil sketch on canvas/paper Breaking down the image into simple shapes for beginners Planning color placement (cow, bells, lotus, background) Hands-On Activity: Complete the full sketch of the cow, calf, lotus flowers, and arch frame.

Lesson 2 — Base Colors & Background
Objective: Lay down clean, flat base colors typical of traditional Pichwai art. Topics Covered: How to mix flat, non-shaded Pichwai colors Painting the teal background evenly Filling in large shapes: Cow and calf base (white/cream) Lotus flower bases (pink tones) Arch frame (golden yellow) Clean edges and brush control Hands-On Activity: Complete flat base colors for the background, cow, lotus flowers, and arch.

Lesson 3 — Detailing the Cow & Lotus Elements
Objective: Add essential Pichwai details to bring the artwork to life. Topics Covered: Painting cow ornaments (garlands, headpieces, beads) Adding red decorative marks on the cow body Eyes, hooves, tail detailing with clean line work Adding petal details and center highlights to lotus flowers Maintaining symmetry and balance in traditional designs Hands-On Activity: Finish all cow + lotus details using fine brushes.

Lesson 4 — Arch, Bells & Decorative Work
Objective: Complete the upper decorative arch and golden hanging bells. Topics Covered: Painting bells, strings, beads, and tassels Achieving clean, crisp shapes with flat color Adding small ornamental accents typical to Pichwai aesthetics Enhancing contrast between arch and background Ensuring symmetry in the hanging elements Hands-On Activity: Finish the arch and bells with full detailing.

Lesson 5 — Highlights, Final Borders & Finishing Touches
Objective: Refine the artwork with final highlights, borders, and corrections. Topics Covered: Adding detailing to lotus petals and ornaments Final line work to clean edges and sharpen shapes Adding traditional borders (optional) Balancing colors and correcting mistakes Final polish to make the artwork cohesive and professional Hands-On Activity: Add highlights, clean lines, apply borders, and complete the final artwork.
